9 January 2014, UMak Employees Lounge – UMak was recently selected by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Center for Educational Innovation and Technology (SEAMEO INNOTECH) as one of the higher education institution venues in the Philippines, along with University of the Philippines Los Baños, for the landmark International Workshop on Higher Education Leadership and Management (HELM) for Indonesian University Officials.
 

UMak Education Students Shine at GAD PisayTeach

 

Education students bagged seven awards during the weeklong training and coaching event dubbed Gender and Development (GAD) PisayTeach at the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) on November 11 to 15, 2013.  UMak received the most number of awards from the tough GAD PisayTeach Committee.

INDUSTRY PARTNERS RECOGNITION DAY: Celebrating Old and New Partnerships


8 November 2013, UMak HPSB Cafeteria UMak held its annual Industry Partners Recognition Day with the theme “Fellowship and Camaraderie Towards Strategizing A New Education Paradigm”.  The university in its second phase of new education paradigm took advantage of the momentous affair to showcase UMak’s various prestigious partner industries and conduct Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing of new ones.

UMAK, UMEDFI AND BAUAN MUNICIPALITY SIGN MOA

Signifying their common and strong belief in the value of partnership and collaboration to achieve synergy and innovation in offering and delivering capacity building programs, initiatives and interventions in education, training and research to help achieve community developmental goals and objectives, UMak President Tomas Lopez, Jr., University of Makati Educational Development Foundation, Inc. (UMEDFI) Chair Edita Chan, and the Municipality of Bauan, Batangas represented by Mayor Ryanh Dolor, signed a Memorandum of Agreement last November 15.

UMak, UMEDFI, and Bauan have agreed to jointly pursue an educational and research undertaking to be administered by a newly created academic center to be called the Bauan Center for Entrepreneurship and Governance (BCEG) that will serve and function as the extension service office of UMEDFI.  
 

CESELE-LUV HOLDS ANNUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND ELECTION OF NEW SET OF OFFICERS

“Our numbers keep on growing”was declared by the officers during the Annual General Assembly of the Center for Extension Service, Entrepreneurial and Livelihood Education (CESELE)-League of UMak Volunteer (LUV) students held at the Health and Physical Sciences Buildinglast November 27.Students from the different colleges and centers, including Higher School ngUMak (HSU) attended the assembly. To date, the number of LUV student members has reached thousands since its founding in 2008. Present during the assembly were:  LUV students outgoing President NicoleBuhia, outgoing Vice President for External Patrick Neil Sumagpang, LUV Coordinator Mary Ann Soronio, former Assistant Adviser Ryan Andrew Dela Luna, and LUV Adviser and CESELE Director Lhiza Ferrer.

Eight under-23 football teams are all set to battle for the coveted top spot of the 3rd MAKATI FOOTBALL CHALLENGE, while premier clubs, Kaya FC and Green Archers United, are raring to take on each other in the much-awaited friendly match of the VP BINAY INVITATIONAL GAMES 2013 on November 22 at the University of Makati Oval.

I M DIGITAL: AN IMD GRADUATE PROGRAM SEMINAR

UMak Experiences Its First Webinar

Living up to the expectations of being digital citizens, the Instructional Media Design (IMD) Graduate Program students of the College of Education organized a seminar entitled I M Digital with the theme  “Innovative Teaching-Learning in the 21st Century: Trends, Tools and Tips” last September 28.  The seminar’s goal was to share with graduate students the theories, principles, and strategies that impact classroom instruction today.

Welcoming the participants was the College of Education Dean, Dr. Milagros Lourdes Torres.  Her inspiring message set the mood of the attendees to eagerly wait for what’s in store for them in the seminar.  Dr. Norita Manly, the Graduate Program Chairperson, on the other hand, outlined the IMD rationale.  Her talk highlighted the track that the program is taking and the relevance of the outputs of the program in coping with the demands of the evolving technology-based education.

 

EVERY NATION DONATES BASKETBALLS AND VOLLEYBALLS TO UMAK ATHLETES

 

Every Nation, led by Pastor Robert Gonzales, has once again supported the UMak athletes by donating basketballs and volleyballs to the Athletics Development Center (ADC) last September 4. The donation is timely with the recent opening of the Universities, Colleges and Schools Athletic Association (UCSAA) Season 3.

University Secretary Elyxzur Ramos, ADC Director Dominador Lera, and Men’s Volleyball Coach Jeff Aragon accept the donation   from Pastor Robert Gonzales of Every Nation (rightmost), on behalf of the UMak Men’s Basketball and Volleyball teams.

 

KABALIKAT UMAK-CESELE CONDUCTS RELIEF OPERATIONS FOR FAMILIES AFFECTED BY TYPHOON MARING AND HABAGAT

The KABALIKAT UMaK-CESELE’S relief operations for 230 families at Gawad Kalinga Alaska – San Pedro, and Gawad Kalinga Freedomville – Sta. Rosa was held last September 14, 2013. UMak has never missed the opportunity to help Filipinos in need especially during calamities and typhoons like Maring and Habagat. Through the efforts of the Center for Extension Services, Entrepreneurial and Livelihood Education (CESELE), UMak student organizations, and volunteers from the League of UMak Volunteers (LUVs), the donations from the university’s different offices, colleges and centers reached the most affected areas in Laguna. CESELE WITH CTM VISIT ADOPTED AETA COMMUNITY IN PORAC ANEW

28 June 2013, PORAC, Pampanga – For the third year in a row, the Center for Extension Service, Entrepreneurial and Livelihood Education (CESELE) led UMak’s visit to the university’s adopted Aeta community in the lower land and upland area in Pasbul-Kamias, Porac, Pampanga.

This time, the College of Technology Management (CTM) Dean, Prof. Eliseo Co, along with the CTM faculty, joined the ocular visit to meet with the Aeta community barangay captain and other community leaders.  CTM is proposing to undertake an entrepreneurial and livelihood program for the Aetas to help this indigenous group upgrade their way of living.

THOUSANDS OF CCS, GRADE 11 AND 12 STUDENTS JOIN THE ‘REVOLUTION’

25 June 2013, UNIVERSITY OF MAKATI MAIN THEATER – An estimated 2,000 UMak College of Computer Science (CCS) and Grade 11 and 12 students of the Higher School ng UMak trooped to attend the “True Love Waits:  Love Revolution” Seminar on Values Education.

The whole day seminar with the intriguing title and the provocative “Don’t waste your life!” battle cry, attracted a long queue of participants as it featured compelling speakers from True Love Waits Philippines (TLWP), Personal Revival Asia (PRASIA) and International Baptist Church (IBC)-Manila Chapter who spoke to the students about prioritizing their studies and not rushing into serious relationships or marriage while still in school.  It proved to be an enlightening and inspiring day for the young ‘revolutionists’.

The new faculty and student members of the League of UMak Volunteers (LUV) had their oath-taking at the conclusion of the Seminar on Community Awareness last June 4 at the Health and Physical Sciences Building-Skills Laboratory.

 

Among the new members were Prof. Tyronne Agapito of the Center for Broadcast and Digital Arts, Prof. Annalyn Diaz of the College of Allied Health Studies, Dr. Brabham Pimentel of the College of Allied Health Studies, Prof. Era Marie Gannaban of the College of Computer Science, Prof. Coleen Sual of the College of Arts and Sciences, Prof. Edesa Grama of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Ms. Lorna Inna De Luna, Student Representative.

 

CESELE HOLDS SEMINAR ON COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARENESS

 

A seminar/workshop on the university’s Community Service/Extension Awareness Program was conducted by the Center for Extension Service, Entrepreneurial and Livelihood Education (CESELE) headed by Dir. Lhiza Ferrer last June 4 at the Health and Physical Sciences Building-Skills Laboratory.

 

This first ever UMak seminar on community service awareness, with the theme “Innovative Leadership and Civic Engagement Management: Building Community Connections”, was organized for extension coordinators and faculty from the different colleges/centers and student leaders from various student organizations of the university under the supervision of Prof. Julius Porley, Director of the Center for Student and Cultural Affairs (CESCA).

CHEERS TO CAA’S “UMAKIAN, BABALIK KA RIN” GRAND RAFFLE DRAW WINNERS

Michaela Espiritu from Maximo Estrella Elementary School was the envy of everyone as she emerged the grand prize winner and took home the much-coveted brand new Toyota Vios during the recently held “UMakian, Babalik Ka Rin” Grand Raffle Draw.

Andro Bando, a UMak OMNI service provider, and Juan Andres from Rizal Elementary School each took home a brand new Kymko motorcycle.  Three brand new bicycles and ten bags of grocery items worth P500 each were also given away.

 

HONORING THE SENIOR CITIZENS OF MAKATI

Lakbay/Aral Saya Program for the Federation of Senior Citizens

 

More than 300 senior citizens from six barangays in Makati (Cembo, East Rembo, Northside, Pitogo, Sta. Cruz and West Rembo) were given a tribute and feted by UMak in the Lakbay/Aral Saya Program for the Federation of Senior Citizens, organized by the Center for Extension Service, Entrepreneurial and Livelihood Education (CESELE) last May 8.

CESELE Director Lhiza Ferrer said that not only was it an afternoon “to honor and appreciate the contributions and achievements of these commendable older adults for the City of Makati,” it was also an afternoon “to celebrate their relentless vitality and aspirations.”

 

CESELE AND CCS JOIN FORCES FOR A MEDICAL MISSION AT THE PINATUBO RESETTLEMENT AREA

 

Amidst the verdant backdrop of Mt. Pinatubo, the University of Makati (UMak) Center for Extension Service, Entrepreneurial and Livelihood Education (CESELE) together with the UMak College of Computer Science (CCS) conducted a medical mission – “Medical, Dental, Optical and Summer Operation Tuli” – from April 12 to 13, 2013 for the mixed Aeta community of the Pinatubo Resettlement Area located at Burgos, Baquilan, at the town of Botolan, Zambales province.

 

UMAK HARDY HERONS SOAR AS 2013 ALCU GAMES OVERALL CHAMPION ALCU-AA Trophy by Jaime Aquino to reside in UMak for a year

8 March 2013, Dalubhasaan ng Lunsod ng San Pablo (DLSP) Activity Area - For the fourth year in a row, University of Makati (UMak) has once again emerged as overall champion of the Association of Local Colleges and Universities (ALCU) Games hauling in 190 points, to convincingly beat 1st runner-up Quezon City Polytechnic University (90 points) and 2nd runner-up Taguig City University (75 points).

Heavy rains mar opening parade but excitement not dampened

 

Rain poured on Sunday afternoon March 3, 2013 at San Pablo, Laguna as athletes from various Local Colleges and Universities paraded the major streets leading to Col. Lauro Dizon National Memorial High School where the opening ceremony of the Association of Local Colleges and Universities (ALCU) Games 2013 was set to take place.  The ALCU Games 2013 is hosted by Dalubhasaan ng Lungsod ng San Pablo (DLSP) from March 3 to 8, 2013

 

14th APRPC Concluded: FROM “DOING WITHOUT DOING”, TBL DARES UMAK OFFICIALS TO “BUMBLE FORWARD TO THE UNKNOWN”

 

“ . . . As we begin to grow, we go from shapeless, gentle form into clearer form, putting them together with greater detail and still greater detail until we craft something dramatically different – Gain confidence with fuzz, with blur . . . it will never be perfect so we should be confident with moving into the unknown!”

 

This was the highlight of UMak President Tomas B. Lopez, Jr.’s directives to conclude the Planning Proper of the University’s Annual Program Review and Planning Conference (APRPC), and very apt for the theme “University of Makati 2013:  Designing a New Education Paradigm”.  The two-day conference was held from December 14 to 15, 2012 at remote Estrellas de Mendoza Aplaya Resort in Laiya Ibabao, San Juan, Batangas.

University of Makati (UMak): ISO 9001:2008 (Quality Management System) Certified

 

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification is conferred by SGS (registered in Geneva, Switzerland as Societé Générale de Surveillance) Phils., Inc, the renowned certifying body in the country, to UMak’s four administrative processes namely Admission, Registration, Release of Grades and Issuance of Transcript of Records of Students

The University was first granted the ISO 9001:2008 Certification on January 18, 2012 valid for three years until January 17, 2015.  The certification, however, is subject to passing the Surveillance Audits which UMak has successfully achieved on October 31, 2012.  UMak, along with Makati City Finance Department, Urban Development Department, and Ospital ng Makati, became one of the ISO certified Offices in the City Government of Makati.

8 MORE UMAK ACADEMIC COURSES GET THE ALCU-COA ACCREDITATION NOD

University of Makati’s (UMak) quest for academic excellence came to fruition when eight more academic programs from one college and three centers passed the Association of Local Colleges and Universities-Commission on Accreditation (ALCU-COA) evaluation after being subjected to voluntary accreditation last December 5 to 7, 2012.  The accreditation nod was announced at the December 7 closing ceremonies when the three-day survey concluded.

 

EVPCom holds 1st Executive Leadership and Planning Seminar

 

The Executive Vice President Committee (EVPCom) presented their Plans and Programs for 2013 during the very first EVPCom Executive Leadership and Planning Seminar last December 3 to 4, 2012, with the theme “EVPCom Leadership:  Empowered Towards Dynamic Changes in Designing New Educational Paradigms”.

With no less than Dr. Edita I. Chan, UMak Executive Vice President, leading the critiquing and setting the direction after each presentation, the one and a half day session proved to be very productive and inspiring for the team, in preparation for the upcoming University-wide Annual Program Review and Planning Workshop.

POAP CONDUCTS 37TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE AT UMAK

The Personnel Officers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (POAP) holds its 37th National Conference in Public Personnel Administration at the University of Makati (UMak) from December 5 to 7.

The organization has actively ‘engaged in the practice of personnel or human resource management (HRM)’ and conducted ‘human resource development (HRD) activities for HRM practitioners in the government bureaucracy to enhance the professional growth of government HRM practitioners and promote sound public personnel administration’ (MC 31)

UMak VPA Raymund Arcega spoke on behalf of UMak President Tomas B. Lopez, Jr. while Makati City Personnel Officer, Director Vissa Marie Aldon represented Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay, Jr. They were among the officials who graced the conference on its first day at the Mini Theater of the University of Makati.

29 November 2012, UNIVERSITY OF MAKATI OVAL - It was a red vs. green night as defending champion De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (CSB) Blazers blazed down fiery San Beda College (SBC) Red Booters with a 2-1 victory, to once again prove their dominance in this season’s finals of the men’s under-19 2nd MAKATI FOOTBALL CHALLENGE (MFC). 

 

CCS holds 1st ICT Research Congress

    It was a tech-oriented day at University of Makati (UMak) as the College of Computer Science (CCS) convened its first ever Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Research Congress, with the theme “Advancing IT Education through ICT Research” last 23 November at the UMak Main Theatre.

 

    The Congress aimed to present and showcase the research projects of IT students from various institutions in the country, increase awareness and commitment to the development and adequate utilization and applications of ICT, and strengthen the network towards delivering relevant and functional IT Education.
