A New Wave of Community Engagement Through Volunteerism

The partnership between the University of Makati (UMak) through the Center for Community Extension and Development (CCED) and the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA) was officially established last September 9, 2024. This partnership resonates volunteer opportunities for the academic community to instill the values of social responsibility, leadership and service.

The partnership between UMak CCED and PNVSCA highlights a shared commitment to embedding volunteerism within the academic framework. Central to this initiative is the concept of “service learning,” a pedagogical approach that merges community service with academic instruction. This model not only integrates academic expertise with community involvement but also encourages students to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, promoting personal growth, social awareness, and civic responsibility.

It also aims to develop viable and sustainable programs that build resilient communities through social connections and drive positive change. By reinforcing UMak’s core values—Resiliency, Innovativeness, Social Responsibility, and Excellence (RISE)—the partnership underscores the growing importance of volunteerism in a changing society. The joint efforts highlight the potential for collective action to create a better world for everyone.

Volunteerism in the academic community serves as a testament to a unique intersection of service, learning, and civic responsibility. Beyond academic achievement, UMak recognizes the importance of developing students as engaged citizens who contribute meaningfully to society.

Present in the contract signing are University President, Dr. Elyxzur Ramos; Vice President for Student Services and Community Development, Mr. Virgilio B. Tabbu; PNVSCA Executive Director, Mr. Donald James Gawe; PNVSCA Senior Volunteer Officer, Ms. Maribel Larracochea; CCED Director, Dr. Niño Faustino; Center for Linkages and Placement Director, Ms. Cynthia Margaretta Jose; and CCED Administrative Officer, Mr. Joselito Binay.
