Established in 2024, the Institute of Arts and Design (IAD) traces its roots to the Center for Performing and Digital Arts, founded in 2001 and renamed the Center for Broadcast and Digital Arts (CBDA) in 2014. CBDA merged with liberal arts departments in 2017 to form the College of Arts and Letters. Now an independent institute, IAD is poised to offer niche programs addressing the ever-evolving educational and creative industry needs.

Associate Professor Mary Acel German holds an MA in Anthropology from the University of the Philippines Diliman and a BA in History from the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV).
Leveraging the confluence of education, art, anthropology, and advocacy, Assoc. Prof. German has over 25 years of meaningful experience in higher education. She began her career as a researcher and instructor at UPV, joining the University of Makati in 1998. From 2005 to 2013, she served as Executive Director of UMak’s Center for Performing and Digital Arts which she transformed in 2014 into the Center for Broadcast and Digital Arts. Under her leadership, she revitalized the university’s animation and film production curriculum, positioning it as one of the country’s most competitive.
Assoc. Prof. German is a Board Trustee of the Animation Council of the Philippines and an active member of Ugnayang Pang-Aghamtao, the Anthropological Association of the Philippines. Her research interests center on the anthropology of identity within both physical and virtual communities, alongside ethnographic investigations of urban landscapes and social spaces. In addition to her academic work, she is deeply committed to documenting cultural heritage and spearheading cultural mapping initiatives for the City of Makati.

About
Assistant Professor Stanley Rovira is a graduate of the Master of Arts in Instructional Media and Design program at the University of Makati. He completed his undergraduate studies with a Bachelor of Arts in Filipino from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. Currently, Asst. Prof. Rovira is pursuing a Doctorate in Education with a major in Innovative Education Management.
With 24 years of dedicated service at UMak, he has held several key positions, including Department Head of Filipino of the former College of Arts and Sciences, College Secretary of the former Center for Performing and Digital Arts, and Director of the Center for Culture and the Arts. Since 2018, he has been serving as the Chair of the Multimedia Arts Program at the Institute of Arts and Design (IAD).
He has played an active role in numerous university-wide academic and cultural initiatives, frequently taking the lead in planning and organizing events that are vital for advancing education for Makatizens. He has also contributed to several IAD projects and partnerships and is a recipient of the World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) Certificate of Appreciation for his expertise in creating an innovative program for WURI 2024 in Seoul, South Korea. Additionally, he has participated in various technical working groups across different institutions, championing the development of animation and film within the academic community.

About
Associate Professor Rosa Wanda del Rosario Motomal holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies from Maryknoll College and a Master of Arts in English Arts from the Philippine Normal University. She is working on her dissertation and is in the final stages of completing her Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Management at the University of Makati.
As the Chair of the Associate Program, her innovative teaching strategies have significantly enhanced student learning outcomes and fostered a collaborative environment. She handles English and Filipino subjects, bringing her extensive knowledge and passion for education into the classroom. She emphasizes creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment that encourages intellectual growth and development.
Beyond her teaching responsibilities, she is actively involved in extension and community services, as well as the university’s religious activities. Her dedication to these initiatives reflects her desire to impact society and support her community positively.
Her commitment to enhancing the curriculum and addressing program concerns within the Communication Department demonstrates her dedication to academic excellence. She continuously works on improving the educational experience for students, ensuring that the curriculum remains relevant and effective.
