Assessing Students’ Learning: A Successful Training for CITE-HSU Faculty

The College of Innovative Teacher Education (CITE) – Higher School ng UMak (HSU) faculty members participated in a comprehensive test construction training last September 18 and 19 at the Health and Physical Science Building of the University of Makati.

Conducted by Associate Professor Jose Ronilo Dacara, the training session aimed to equip participants with the skills needed to create effective test questions. Meanwhile, CITE Dean, Associate Professor Jayson Bergania welcomed and inspired the participants, briefly outlining Assoc. Prof. Dacara’s background and expertise while emphasizing the significance of the training.

The training covered fundamental concepts of testing, assessment, and evaluation, including key aspects of multiple-choice test construction, its essential components, and common pitfalls to avoid. Assoc. Prof. Dacara highlighted the need to design questions that assess not only knowledge recall but also students’ abilities to apply, analyze, evaluate, and create. His extensive expertise allowed him to address audience inquiries effortlessly and provided practical tips that enriched the sessions even further.

Assoc. Prof. Dacara concluded his presentation by encouraging faculty to refine their assessment methods through item banks and collaboration with peers to enhance test designs. Assoc. Prof. Bergania supported this by sharing important reminders and insights, highlighting the need to balance Lower-Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) with Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Ms. Gladys Magno and Ms. Genalyn Marquez shared their insights and feedback on the utility, practicality, and timeliness of the training sessions.

The training session is part of CITE-HSU’s ongoing efforts to provide faculty development opportunities that promote academic excellence and improve student learning outcomes.
