The Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO), also known as the ITSO, is a partnership between universities and institutional partners of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL).
Its purpose is to improve the management of intellectual property in academic environments. The construction of ITSOs, also known as “”Patent Libraries,”” within universities and higher education institutions was initiated by IPOPHL in 2010. In 2024, The University of Makati joined the ITSO community and is currently the second LUC member of ITSO.
The main goal of ITSO is to strengthen the ability of member universities to obtain patent information, which in turn enhances research efforts, educational activities, idea generation, and larger commercial development initiatives.
In addition to being custodians of patent information, ITSO aims to transform into a comprehensive patent service provider, offering assistance not just to the academic community but also to local industries. This versatile position involves conducting patent searches, creating drafts, representing clients in prosecution proceedings, providing consulting services, organizing training programs, and overseeing all aspects of intellectual property (IP) administration.
Furthermore, ITSO aims to promote the generation of intellectual property in academic and research fields, including copyrights, industrial designs, inventions, and utility models. By implementing these coordinated endeavors, ITSO strives to cultivate a climate of ingenuity and intellectual property creation, therefore making a valuable contribution to the progress of knowledge and economic growth.
