Data Privacy Demystified: UMak’s Seminar for a Cybersecure Campus!

The University of Makati Center for Data Protection and Records Management (CDPRM) hosted an insightful and engaging seminar on Data Privacy and Intellectual Property which brought together members of the UMak community —including students, faculty, and staff—to explore critical issues surrounding digital security, data privacy, and the protection of intellectual property.

Expert speakers from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines – Engr. Maria Concepcion Zabala and the Regional Trial Court – Atty. Darrio Aguila presented key concepts of data privacy and intellectual property, ensuring that attendees understood their rights and responsibilities when managing sensitive information, and processing their intellectual properties. The session highlighted the importance of protecting personal data and respecting intellectual property rights in today’s digital world.

The major highlight of the seminar was the in-depth session on the various types of cyberattacks and scams that individuals and organizations are likely to encounter. With cybercrime becoming more sophisticated, the speakers shared valuable insights into different types of cyber threats, including phishing, ransomware, and identity theft. Attendees learned how these attacks operate and, most importantly, how to identify and avoid them. The session empowered participants with the knowledge to better protect themselves and their data from the growing dangers of the online world.

Another essential topic addressed during the seminar was the concept of a “digital footprint” which emphasized the importance of being mindful of one’s digital presence and provided practical advice on how to manage and protect personal information shared online. The session helped attendees understand how their digital activities can impact their personal and professional lives.

The seminar combined theoretical knowledge with practical guidance to enhance cybersecurity skills. Key takeaways included creating strong, unique passwords and identifying phishing emails and suspicious links, equipping participants with strategies to improve online security.

Throughout the event, it was clear that UMak is committed to fostering a culture of data protection and privacy awareness. By focusing on both data privacy and intellectual property, the seminar reinforced the shared responsibility of all stakeholders to protect sensitive information, ensuring a secure and responsible digital environment at UMak.

The success of the Data Privacy and Intellectual Property Seminar highlights the ongoing need for education and awareness in the fight against cybercrime. By providing participants with the skills to better understand and manage their digital presence, CDPRM has made significant strides in securing both personal and institutional data. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the lessons learned at the seminar will remain crucial in shaping a future where data privacy and intellectual property are respected, protected, and safeguarded.
