Two UMak Graduates present Thesis Films at Nat’l. Conference

Two Bachelor of Multimedia Arts (Film) alumni from the University of Makati (UMak) presented their thesis films at the Communication and Media Studies Conference, hosted by the Philippine Association of Communication Educators on October 18-19, 2024, at St. Paul University, Quezon City. This year’s conference centered on the theme, “Humanizing Communication Ecology: Locating Values in Communication Education and Media Practice.”

Jacob Aaron D. Hinanay and Romhelyn A. Carrasca, recent graduates of UMak’s Institute of Arts and Design, shared their research findings, which culminated in the production of their documentary films.

Hinanay’s film, Undefended: On Asia’s Most Dangerous Place for Environmental Defenders, examined the plight of environmental activists in the Philippines, which is considered the most unsafe country in Asia for nature defenders. Hinanay is a grantee of the Film Development Council of the Philippines’ Student Film Assistance Program for 2024.  Meanwhile, Carrasca’s documentary, Huling Silip Sa Taliptip: Exploring the Impact of the Construction of the New Manila International Airport, investigated the effects of the large-scale infrastructure project in a local community in Bulakan, Bulacan. Both films premiered at DokyuMakati on May 2024 at University of Makati Auditorium.

During the presentation, Hinanay and Carrasca sparked meaningful discussions on environmental and social justice issues among the conference’s audience. Their participation highlights the exceptional work of UMak’s film graduates and their contributions to relevant societal conversations through the lens of multimedia arts and film.

Their registration for the paper presentation was sponsored by the UMak Center for University Research.
