Day Two, September 24. Xiamen Nanyang University

On Day 2 at Xiamen Nanyang University (XMU), the delegates explored the institution’s academic offerings, with a particular focus on the School of International Relations and the Research Center for Southeast Asian Studies. XMU, a first-class national university, is also known for its beautiful campus, adorned with lush gardens throughout various areas of the university.

The rain had been unrelenting since Monday, but the smile of the Dean of International Studies provided a welcoming atmosphere as the delegates watched him approach after they had finished taking photos.

The morning began with a tour of the impressive library at XMU’s School of International Relations. The spacious facility boasts a vast collection of books, journals, and digital resources, offering students ample opportunities for research and study. With 40,000 books in Chinese and over 20,000 in foreign languages, the library also features 25 electronic databases and 18 large-scale special collections.

Following the library tour, the formal reception commenced. Prof. Gao Yanjie, Dean of the School of International Studies, presented an overview of the School of International Relations, allowing the audience – delegates, XMU faculty, and administrator – to better understand the school’s history and key milestones. Prof. Gao shared that XMU, founded in 1956, was the earliest research institute dedicated to Southeast Asian studies. In a gesture of warm hospitality toward the Filipino delegates, he also shared a slide from last year’s Education Leaders’ trip where UMak President, Prof. Elyxzur C. Ramos participated.

The delegates witnessed the ceremonial MOU signing between XMU and UP Diliman which was represented by the Office of International Linkages Diliman Director, Prof. Arceo.

After this, some delegates were given the opportunity to talk about their respective institutions, UMak being one of them.
