UMak CARES: Cultivating Digital Responsibility in Students

Today’s aggressive digital world requires protecting personal data and understanding cybersecurity. Recognizing the importance of this, the University of Makati hosted a seminar series titled “UMak C.A.R.E.S. (Campus Awareness Response Educational Service): Data Protection and Security Strategies and Solutions in the Modern Era.” The events took place on September 4, 25, and November 8, 2024, at the Health and Physical Science Building Room 507.

The UMak C.A.R.E.S. seminar provided a comprehensive framework for understanding data security and privacy. It focused on four key objectives – the introduction to fundamental concepts related to data privacy and intellectual property to build a solid foundation of knowledge; various types of cyber threats, including phishing, malware, and social engineering scams, and how to recognize them; implications of a digital footprint, helping students understand how online behavior can impact their privacy and security; and practical strategies for creating strong, unique passwords and identifying suspicious emails were shared, enabling students to protect themselves from phishing attempts and unauthorized access.

Participated by the students from the Institute of Nursing, Institute of Pharmacy, and the College of Construction Science and Engineering, the series highlight included a live simulation of phishing scams and hands-on sessions where attendees practiced creating secure passwords and identifying red flags in suspicious emails. The collaborative learning environment fostered active engagement and allowed students to apply their knowledge to realistic scenarios.

A joint effort by three key UMak offices, the Center for Data Privacy and Records Management focused on educating the UMak community about data protection laws and practices; the College of Computing and Information Sciences provided technical expertise on cybersecurity and modern digital solutions; and the Center for Student Formation and Discipline ensured alignment with the university’s holistic approach to student development and ethical conduct. These departments demonstrated UMak’s commitment to equipping students with relevant and practical skills to thrive in the modern era while maintaining data security and ethical standards.

UMak C.A.R.E.S. highlighted the university’s proactive stance in preparing its students for the challenges of the digital landscape. By addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of data protection and cybersecurity, the seminar empowered attendees to take control of their digital presence and safeguard their personal information. As cyber threats continue to evolve, initiatives like UMak C.A.R.E.S. play a vital role in fostering a community that values awareness, vigilance, and responsibility. The knowledge and skills gained by the students from this seminar series will undoubtedly serve as valuable assets in their personal and professional lives.
