UMak Filmmakers receive CMMA Recognition
UMak recipients of the 46th Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) Special Citation for Student TV Production received their plaque on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at the City State Tower Hotel in Manila. Director Ronald Racalde, Jr. and Segment Producer Romer Nicole Perez accepted the plaque on behalf of their production team. Media personalities and luminaries from various media networks were also present at the ceremony.
The citation was for a 2023 documentary class project, Kalye Eskwela. It tells the inspiring story of Delfin Angeles (67), who, after retiring from 36 years of teaching at the Philippine Science High School, continued his passion for teaching by providing free, tailored lessons to children of Callejon 3, Sta. Ana, Manila. Children, parents, and teachers alike appreciate the street-side classroom’ Angeles sets up in his neighborhood and are grateful for his ability to address students’ learning challenges. The informal setting also allows children to learn and play, fostering an engaging environment unique from the traditional classroom.
The documentary captured the essence of Mr. Angeles’ values and mission — offering sustainable and inclusive education that empowers children and inspires his community. It premiered at Dokyu Makati in 2023 and was later featured in the 35th Gawad CCP para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video under the Crosscurrents Program.
This CMMA recognition underscores the power of media as a platform to promote Catholic values. It cements Kalye Eskwela as not just a class project but a testament to the Institute of Arts and Design’s effort to produce students who honor these values and understand their impact on community and nation-building.
