The delegates were also shown the library donated by Thai Princess, Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to the university. Apart from the emphasis on education especially on Chinese literature and culture, the Thai Princess, also an Honorary Professor at HQU, deeply promotes the friendship between Thailand and China. The delegates had an enriching experience at the International Exhibit Room.

A visit to Huaqiao University (HQU) at Quanzhou, one witnesses its testament to inclusivity as it opens its gates to offer Chinese language studies not only to local scholars but to students from every corner of the globe.

Nurturing the next generation of globally-minded citizens takes on a new meaning as the university is enveloped by coastal beauty. The students are nurtured not only by learning the classics but also by the nature around them. One just has to cross the street to rest the eyes and spirit and watch the waves calmy flow.

The tree-lined walkways lead to buildings where Chinese classes were held. The delegation was fortunate to witness them in action.

Walking through the pathways may remind one of Calle Crisologo in Vigan as the pavements seemed like cobblestones. Counting several steps leads to a wall where artwork depicts Confucius – apt due to the wonderful opportunity the delegates were given through this trip.

The delegates received a warm Filipino welcome from one of their scholars, Mr. Zed Banlaoi, an Economics graduate from the Philippines with a minor in Chinese Studies. At the young age of 23, Zed has decided that, in addition to being a Chinese Language Scholar at HQU, he plans to pursue an MBA or MA at a university in China that also offers a scholarship.

As the tour around the campus continued, Zed shared that, although far from home, living in the dormitory at HQU allowed him to study after class and, on freer nights, explore the city and practice conversational Chinese. He encouraged more Filipino youth to consider scholarships in China to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the culture.

As the delegates immersed themselves in the beautiful campus of Huaqiao, each marveled at its beauty while associating it with memories and places from back home.
