UMak, now a member of FDCP’s Academic Film Society

The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), through its Chair and CEO Tirso Cruz III, officially sealed University of Makati’s membership in the Academic Film Society (AFS). UMak’s College of Arts and Letters (CAL) and its student organization, FilmSoc, received the official documents on Tuesday, February 7.

AFS Goal

The AFS is an association of accredited schools, colleges, and universities in the Philippines that have existing film programs, courses, and film clubs. The society aims to gather and nurture emerging filmmakers from the student body by providing them access to training programs, financial assistance, and other support to aid their growth as filmmakers.

Value for UMak

This membership will greatly benefit Multimedia Arts students of CAL. AFS offers funding grants ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 pesos, which can be availed by students doing their thesis films. While finances do not guarantee creative success, UMak’s experience proves that budgetary limitations can impede students from executing their creative visions given their socio-economic profiles. Hence, any form of financial assistance from the AFS will greatly help them, enabling them to graduate on time.

In addition to the thesis film grants, UMak FilmSoc can also avail of film workshops, mentorship, access to a media library, and use of cinematheque centers, among others.

As UMak commits to creating a thriving community of filmmakers, the collaboration with AFS marks a promising chapter in the university’s journey toward providing its students with enriching opportunities and support for their creative endeavors.
